Pada awal tahun 80-an, masyarakat Desa
Jombang dan sekitarnya mengalami kesulitan dalam hal kelanjutan sekolah
anak-anaknya, terutama saat anaknya akan melanjutkan ke SMP atau yang
sederajat. Hal itu terjadi karena di
wilayah Desa Jombang dan sekitarnya belum ada SMP yang dapat menampung alumni
SD yang jumlahnya cukup banyak.
Alternatifnya, mereka melanjutkan sekolah ke SMP yang letaknya jauh dari
tempat tinggalnya, yaitu ke wilayah Ciputat, Ciledug dan Serpong, bahkan tidak sedikit mereka melanjutkan
sekolah ke wilayah DKI Jakarta.
Perkembangan wilayah Desa Jombang dan
sekitarnya dari tahun ke tahun semakin bertambah, terutama dalam hal pertambahan jumlah
penduduk, baik pertambahan karena kepindahan dari luar ke dalam wilayah Desa
Jombang, maupun pertambahan karena angka natalitas yang cukup tinggi. Terlebih-lebih di wilayah Desa Jombang dan
sekitarnya berdiri perumahan-perumahan seperti jamur di musim hujan. Dengan demikian, berdirinya sekolah baik SD,
SMP maupun SMA saat itu sangat mendesak untuk segera diwujudkan.
Berangkat dari pemikiran tersebut,
maka pada tahun 1984 berdirilah SMP Negeri Jombang sebagai fillial SMP Negeri 1
Ciputat (SMP Negeri 3 Kota Tangerang Selatan sekarang) dengan membuka 2 kelas
sebagai rintisan awal.
Perkembangan berikutnya - setelah
setahun, pengelolaan SMP Negeri Jombang diserahkan dari SMP Negeri 1 Ciputat
kepada SMP Negeri Cireundeu (SMP Negeri 2 Kota Tangerang Selatan sekarang)
dengan daya tampung kelas 1 menjadi 3 kelas.
Pada tahun 1986, atas swadaya masyarakat
dan bantuan pemerintah Kabupaten Tangerang dan Provinsi Jawa Barat (waktu itu),
didirikanlah 2 ruang kelas di atas tanah bekas perkebunan karet di sebelah
Barat Kampung Gedong Desa Jombang.
Setelah meluluskan angkatan pertama, tepatnya pada tahun 1987 secara resmi berdiri
SMP Negeri Jombang secara definitif
dengan Kepala Sekolah Bapak Drs. Tatang Ruchijat. Dengan demikian, statusnya bukan lagi sebagai
SMP Fillial dari SMP Negeri Cireundeu, tapi secara resmi berdiri sebagai SMP
Negeri Jombang.
Pada masa kepemimpinan Bapak Drs.
Tatang Ruchijat ini pula, dengan bantuan pemerintah didirikan Unit Gedung Baru (UGB) SMP Negeri Jombang
dan selesai pada bulan September 1989 dan diresmikan pada tanggal 14 Oktober
1989.
Pada tahun 1997, dengan berdasarkan
SK. Mendikbud RI Nomor: 034/O/1997 tentang perubahan Nomenklatur SMP menjadi
SLTP serta Organisasi dan Tata Kerja, SLTP Negeri Jombang berubah menjadi SLTP
Negeri 3 Ciputat. Berikutnya pada tahun
2000 menjadi SMP Negeri 3 Ciputat. Selanjutnya, seiring dengan pemekaran
wilayah dan terbentuknya Kota Tangerang Selatan, berdasarkan Peraturan Wali Kota (PERWAL) no 10 Tahun 2009 tanggal 25 Mei 2009 sampai sekarang SMP Negeri 3 Ciputat menjadi SMP Negeri 6 Kota Tangerang
Selatan

SMP Negeri 3 Ciputat engaged in the field of education that has the goal of actively and directly contribute to the intellectual life of the nation, especially in the field of science education.

Changes in leadership occur in early 1990. Head of SMP Jombang Drs. Tatang Ruchijat who had been instrumental in developing the SMP Jombang converted redeployed to SMP Negeri 1 Tangerang and instead was replaced by Mr. Apit Suprijadi.

Along with the entry into force of the new curriculum of the semester system into the SMP quarterly Jombang its name should be changed to SLTP Jombang. But the name did not last long, the name was changed to SLTP Jombang SLTP 3 Ciputat by decree. Education Minister Decree No. 034 / O1997 change into a junior high school SMP Nomenclature.
Since January 1998 the position of head rotation occurs SLTP 3 Ciputat that handshake by Drs. R. Mumuh Al-Muchsin replaced by Drs. H. Nurhadi, M.M.
In 2001 returned a change of leadership. Drs. H. Nurhadi, M.M. was replaced by Mr. ACENG Sakur, S. Pd. In the leadership of Mr. ACENG Sakur, S. Pd a change of the school name. SLTP 3 Ciputat changed to SMP Negeri 3 Ciputat.
In 2004, a change back the principal. Mr. ACENG Sakur, S. Pd was replaced by Mr. H. Abdul Razak, S.Pd. M.Sc. Then in 2009, Mr. H. Abdul Razak, S.Pd. M.Sc. was replaced by Mr. Ikbal, S.Pd. MM. Along with the formation of South Tangerang City there is a change in the name of elementary, middle and high school and junior high school in accordance with the order of birth in South Tangerang, the SMP Negeri 3 Ciputat renamed SMP 6 South Tangerang City.
Back in 2015 a change of Principal. Mr. Ikbal, Spd. MM was replaced by Mr. Alan Suherlan, S.Pd. MM.
